About Veila

Welcome to Veila

The hidden web, revealed — a search engine for the part of the internet most people never see.

Veila sets out to do something simple but surprisingly hard: make the Tor network searchable. We crawl and index onion services so that you can explore this corner of the web the same way you'd explore any other — by typing what you're looking for and getting a list of places to start.

What is the Tor network?

Tor — short for "The Onion Router" — is a network that routes your traffic through several volunteer-run relays, wrapping it in layers of encryption along the way (hence the onion). The result is strong anonymity: it becomes very difficult for anyone to tell who you are or what you're looking at. Tor also hosts onion services, sites that live entirely inside the network and end in .onion rather than .com. These sites are unindexed by traditional search engines, which is exactly the gap Veila exists to fill.

About its reputation

Tor has a reputation as a haven for illegal activity, and it would be dishonest to pretend there's nothing to that. Marketplaces and other unsavory corners of the network are real, and you'll find some of them indexed here.

But the same could be said of the internet as a whole. The open web hosts fraud, abuse, and every kind of crime imaginable — and yet we don't dismiss the internet as nothing but those things, because it's also how we learn, organize, stay in touch, and speak freely.

Tor is no different. It's a tool, and like any tool its character comes from how it's used. For journalists protecting sources, activists under censorship, whistleblowers, and ordinary people who simply value their privacy, Tor is indispensable infrastructure. Anonymity is not the same thing as wrongdoing — it's the same privacy most people take for granted offline.

Veila takes no position on the sites it indexes. Our goal is transparency and understanding: you can't reason about something you can't see. By mapping the hidden web, we hope to make it a little less mysterious — for researchers, for the curious, and for anyone who believes that visibility is the first step toward understanding.
